WordCruncher Analytic Tools
You can only open books in WordCruncher viewer that are in one of the libraries attached to the Viewer. Publisher libraries can only be changed by the creating publisher: however, each copy of WordCruncher Viewer has a User Library where you can create bookcases, bookshelves, and add books.

Introduction

WordCruncher in general is an analytic tool that allows users to do searches with complex word arguments in the search. This level of research support is more than adequate for many researchers and scholars. However, there are additional research tools called reports. Below is a summary of all these tools.

Classes of WordCruncher Analytic Tools

Book Reports

Type

Description

Book Information

General data about a book (e.g. number of verses, chapters, etc).

Character Usage

Listing of the characters found in the book (can be useful to find outriders).

Vocabulary Dispersion

A visual overview of each word’s occurrence patterns. Colored vertical bars represent word occurrence within 1000 word blocks. The display of this bars is within report columns that represent in width each table of contents entry (e.g. Old Testament). You can drill into a reference to see data for just that reference.

Vocabulary Frequency Distribution

The frequency counts for words are shown for the entire book or for sections (user created groupings of references like the “Five Gospels”). You could answer the following questions with this report:

  1. What words occur only in the Book of Mormon (I want a list of these words)?
  2. What words that occur 3 times as often in the Book of Mormon as the Bible (and occur in both books)?
  3. What is the highest frequency word that occurs only in the Book of Mormon?

Filters and sorts can modify these lists.

Search Reports

Search Vocabulary

This lists all the words that were found by the search engine. With simple searches this report is of little value. With wild card searches, it lists all the words that matched the search criteria. The word frequencies can be mapped into sections (e.g. Book of Mormon, Bible, etc.).

Lowest Level Frequency Distribution

When you search for a list of OR’d words (and + the + of + out + them + these), this report can give you the phrase or verse where most of these words occur. This is VERY useful for finding examples of a group of words (e.g. for training materials).
